AIBA Election Process Enters Next Phase

September 25th, 2018 / IBA

As per the AIBA election procedure guidelines, the application phase for candidates wishing to run for AIBA’s Executive Committee has now come to a close.

According to AIBA’s Election Procedure which was presented to all AIBA National Federations earlier this year, all candidate application forms must have been received at the AIBA Headquarters by midnight September 23, 2018. Following these guidelines and standard procedure, all applications and nomination forms will now be reviewed by the AIBA Election Committee.

The Election Committee will be led by its Chairman Mr. Jost Anton Schmid (SUI). Mr. Schmid brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the diplomatic sector, having worked at several Swiss Embassies worldwide.  Together with the Chairman of the AIBA Disciplinary Commission Mr. Dennis O’Connell (USA) and the independent Member of the Election Committee Mrs. Annemarie Stark (GER), their first order of business will be to determine whether the candidate applications received meet the conditions of eligibility as per AIBA statutes. Mrs. Stark herself is a boxer from Germany with four national championship titles to her name. As previously revealed, in the interest of transparency, the AIBA Interim President has abdicated the right to select the independent member as outlined in the statues and given full support to the AIBA Ethics Commission Chair to select this positon.

The AIBA Election Commission will officially publish the list of all approved candidates on October 3, 2018.

Tom Virgets: “This is very important time for AIBA, we have every trust in Mr. Schmid as Chairman of the Election Commission and his team to ensure that the election process is carried out in a transparent and democratic way. We are especially pleased to have an athlete within the Commission, the voice of our athletes is very important to the future of our sport.”
