DAY 5 Preview: AIBA World Championships 2015

October 10th, 2015 / All

After four days of high-intensity preliminary rounds, Saturday brings the excitement of quarter-finals day to the AIBA World Championships in Doha, with four bouts in each of the ten weight categories across two sessions.

The action begins at 1pm (CET) with the light flyweights, with one of the revelations of the tournament so far, Filipino Rogen Ladon, hoping his impressive run can continue against Poland’s Dawid Jagodzinski.

In one of the most hotly anticipated bouts of the day, London 2012 Olympic champion and former AIBA World champ Roniel Iglesias of Cuba meets Azerbaijan’s European Games gold medalist Parviz Baghirov in the welterweight class. In the same half of the draw, Kazakhstan’s WSB star Daniyar Yeleussinov faces another Filipino, Eumir Felix Marcial, in a re-match of this year’s ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships final.

Another Baku 2015 gold medalist, Michael O’Reilly, will face stiff opposition in the form of Kazakhstan’s Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in Saturday afternoon’s top middleweight clash, but perhaps the most eagerly awaited bouts will be between the light heavyweights. Expect the likes of Cuba’s Julio La Cruz, Croatian Hrvoje Sep, Netherlands’ Peter Mullenberg and Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan to raise the roof as they get the second half of the evening session underway in style.
