Uzbekistan secured a record number of six medals in the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships last week, despite fielding one of the youngest squads among the top boxing nations.

The collective talents of Murodjon Akhmadaliev (56kg), London 2012 Olympian Fazliddin Gaibnazarov (64kg) and 19-year-old Bektemir Melikuziev (75kg) all claimed silvers while Elnur Abduraimov (60kg), Elshod Rasulov (81kg) and newcomer Bakhodir Jalolov (91+kg) left Qatar with bronze medals.

The haul meant that Uzbekistan secured second place in the team rankings in Doha, behind only the Cuban delegation – their best performance in the history of the event. Uzbekistan debuted in the AIBA World Boxing Championships in 1993 and are currently in the top 10 of the overall medal tally with a total of 30 medals, including 5 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals in their World Championships history.

Following their successful performance in the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, Uzbekistan will also debut in Season VI of the World Series of Boxing showcasing their star boxers in the AIBA’s global team boxing competition.

Reflecting on the achievement, the General Secretary of the Uzbek Boxing Federation, Bekhzod Mirtimirov, said:

”I think one of the key elements of our great performance was the decision to select coaches who love Uzbekistan and who will do everything for our country. We have changed most of the members of our national team in 2014 and built up a new squad that has a great future. The Uzbekistan Boxing Federation has been focused on the athletes and coaches that can accomplish our goals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Our best coaches Marat Kurbanov, former Olympian Rustam Saidov, Tulkin Kilichev, Abduvali Shomirzaev, Islam Kabinov, Rakhmatjon Roziakhunov, Aleksandr Razmakhov and Nabijon Boymatov have all supported the national team over the last year to get us this great result at the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships.”
