Turkmenistan excel on Day 3 of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships
The ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships continued with the third day of the preliminaries, where the Flyweight (52 kg), Light Welterweight (64 kg), Welterweight (69 kg) and Middleweight (75 kg) classes all competed to reach the last 16.
Bout of the day
Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka is competing in his first major competition, but started his Bangkok journey with a fantastic Flyweight success over Mongolia’s Nurlan Askhar.
Tanaka started slowly, but soon adapted to the level of the high quality bout, and began to utilise his strong and accurate combinations.
Askhar enjoyed his own success in the second round when his aggression paid dividends, before Tanaka secured the narrow, but entertaining victory after excelling in the final three minutes.
After his opening triumph, the 22-year-old Japanese boxer will next meet Uzbekistan’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games silver medallist Shakhobiddin Zoirov.
Team of the day
Turkmenistan enjoyed an excellent day where two of their boxers reached the last 16.
Zarip Jumayev recently recovered from a serious injury, and looked back to his best in Bangkok when he eliminated Indonesian Flyweight Julio Bria, while in the final bout of the evening session, President’s Cup silver medallist Arslanbek Achilov sealed Turkmenistan’s second triumph when he sensationally stopped Japan’s Ryota Hamazaki.
Surprise of the day
China’s Zhou Di lost to Jordan’s Odai Riad Al-Hindawi in the quarter-final of the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, but managed to win their Middleweight rematch in Bangkok.
The Round-Up
World Series of Boxing star Hu Jianguan continued China’s successful day by outclassing Bangladesh’s National Champion Gregory Hasda.
Sri Lanka’s Sisira Kumarasinghe produced an inspired performance to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Chen Kuan Hua at Welterweight (69 kg).
Philippines’ AIBA Junior World Champion Eumir Felix Marcial is another Welterweight medal contender, and defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Erkinbek Bolotbek Uulu to maintain his excellent reputation.
Kyrgyzstan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships competitor Azamat Kanybek Uulu then delivered a great triumph for his country as he knocked down Qatar’s Abdulla Abdulrahman Al-Hadi Toum en route to a Middleweight victory.
Fact of the day
Sri Lanka secured their first win in the competition since 2011, while Turkmenistan and Vietnam continued to impress.

“I felt really confident and fresh in the beginning of the bout, and my tactic worked well enough. I think the difference between me and my opponent was our previous level of experience,” said Sri Lanka’s Sisira Kumarasinghe.
