Panama’s Atheyna Bylon won the battle of the AIBA Women’s World Champions at the Boxam Tournament

Women boxers competed on the second day of competitions at the 35th edition of the Boxam Tournament in Castellon de la Plana, Spain where the winners of today’s 20 contests advanced to the semi-finals. Panama’s Atheyna Bylon amazed in the final bout of the day and defeated Russia’s Zenfira Magomedalieva in the battle of the AIBA Women’s World Champions.
Altogether 127 boxers from 17 nations are attending the Boxam Tournament. The competitions are held with strict Covid-19 policies.
United States’ Virginia Fuchs was outstanding on Day 2
United States’ Virginia Fuchs is their best women’s flyweight (51kg) boxer since 2016 when she defeated a previous star, Marlen Esparza. Fuchs won around 90% of her international contests in recent years and claimed a bronze medal at the New Delhi 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. The US girl arrived from the Strandja Memorial Tournament to the Boxam and met with Spain’s Maria Gonzalez Caceres in the quarter-finals. Fuchs was still fresh during her long European tour and landed quicker punches than her Spanish opponent. The experienced US boxer won the contest by a unanimous decision which means she is a guaranteed medallist at the Boxam Tournament.
Strong Puerto Rican veterans in Castellon
Cristina Cruz achieved two bronze medals at the previous editions of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships representing the USA team but she returned to her roots and now competes for Puerto Rico. The experienced boxer suffered a narrow loss to Italy’s Olena Savchuk at the flyweight (51kg) but she proved that she could be the country’s weapon in the upcoming events.
Kiria Tapia is another veteran boxer who decided to return to the sport due to the possibility of participation at the Olympic Games. She won the AMBC American Confederation’s Women’s Boxing Championships several times in the past. Tapia is relatively small for the lightweight (60kg) but she has the speed and the aggressive style of boxing to beat her opponents. The Puerto Rican girl controlled all of the three rounds against Spain’s Patricia Rodriguez Venegas and marched into the last four in Castellon. Her teammate Stephanie Pineiro was too smart for Spain’s Melissa Noemi Gonzalez Tudge at the welterweight (69kg).
Panama’s Atheyna Bylon impressed with her won against the defending World Champion
Panama’s Atheyna Bylon claimed a gold medal at the welterweight (69kg) in the Jeju 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. The Panamanian No.1 met with defending AIBA Women’s World Champion Russia’s Zenfira Magomedalieva who earned titles in 2014 and repeated the success in 2019. Both boxers compete at the middleweight (75kg) now and delivered a sensational fight in the Boxam Tournament. Magomedalieva moved forward, she tried to catch the quick Panamanian in the first round but received counter-punches from longer reach. Bylon produced her best round in the third one when she was almost untouchable for the strong Russian and won their fabulous contest.
