The super heavyweight boxers are the biggest of the Olympic pugilists, and several suitably sizeable reputations have been hard-earned in the rings since the category was introduced for the Los Angeles 1984 Games. American Tyrell Biggs won the inaugural gold, defeating one Lennox Lewis on his way to the final, but it wasn’t to be the last roll of the Olympic dice for Lewis. The British-Canadian returned four years later to win the gold medal in Seoul with a victory over the USA’s formidable Riddick Bowe, and went on to become one of the world’s biggest boxing stars of the 1990s.

Triple World Champion Roberto Balado won the Olympic title in 1992, before the hard-hitting Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko, aptly nicknamed Dr Steelhammer’, announced himself on the super heavyweight world with gold in Atlanta four years later.

Klitschko remains one of the most high-profile of today’s boxers, but it is Italian southpaw Roberto Cammarelle who can boast a unique super-heavyweight hat-trick having won Olympic bronze at Athens 2004, gold at Beijing 2008 and silver at London 2012, narrowly losing out to Britain’s Anthony Joshua four years ago.
