The International Boxing Association (IBA) was represented at the World Cup Diplomacy Summit 2026 – A Global Dialogue, organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Alisa Shcherbachenya, IBA Director of International Relations, took part as a speaker in the plenary session titled “Promoting Grassroots Participation and Pathways for Future Athletes and Leaders”. The session brought together representatives of UNHCR, Peace and Sport, New Balance, academia and international sport organizations.
The Summit gathered senior diplomats, representatives of United Nations entities, international sport federations, government officials, academics and private-sector leaders to discuss the role of sport as a tool for diplomacy, sustainable development, social inclusion and international cooperation.
During her intervention, Shcherbachenya underlined the importance of creating inclusive pathways for women and young people, particularly in underserved communities. She also highlighted the role of international sport federations in expanding access to sport through capacity-building initiatives, educational programmes and support mechanisms for National Federations.
Shcherbachenya also addressed the growing importance of athlete leadership development, noting that athletes today are increasingly expected to serve not only as competitors, but also as role models, advocates and community leaders. In this regard, she emphasized the need to invest in education, professional development and leadership opportunities throughout athletes’ careers.
As part of her remarks, Shcherbachenya presented several IBA initiatives aimed at expanding participation and strengthening the global boxing community. These included the Financial Support Program for National Federations, educational projects and the Fair Chance Team initiative, which provides opportunities for athletes who are unable to compete under their national flag due to humanitarian or social circumstances.
In addition to her participation in the panel discussion, Shcherbachenya contributed to the development of the Summit’s White Paper on Sport Diplomacy, coordinated by UNITAR. The publication is set to consolidate recommendations and best practices from international experts and stakeholders on the future role of sport in diplomacy, development and social impact.
The Summit provided an important platform for dialogue between the United Nations, international sport organizations, humanitarian actors, academic institutions and the private sector, further reinforcing the growing recognition of sport as a catalyst for inclusion, cooperation and sustainable development worldwide.
