IBA President visits Egypt while the 5th Arab Boxing for Youth Championships commences

President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev arrived to Egypt today to discuss local boxing development and attend the Opening Ceremony of the 5th Arab Boxing for Youth Championships. The spectators will see 70 athletes from 12 nations competing in the Championships which takes place in Cairo, Egypt, with semi-finals and finals scheduled for 5-6 August.

After visiting the local Olympic Museum, IBA President Umar Kremlev also held a meeting with the President of the Egyptian Olympic Committee Hisham Hattab, the President of the Egyptian boxing federation, and Hassan Moustafa, President of the Egyptian handball federation.

President Kremlev said: “I would like to congratulate the local boxing federation and Egyptian Olympic Committee with the successful start of the 5th Arab Boxing for Youth Championships. It is an important event for the continent and IBA is happy to support it, especially as a part of the “Year of Africa” initiative. Egypt has a proud boxing history, I am sure that we could organize even bigger international tournaments here in the future.”

The Egyptians, together with the South Africans, were the first African boxers participating in the Olympic Games in 1924. Egypt claimed five bronze medals in the history of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships and two bronze medals in Women’s World Boxing Championships. Local boxers have also claimed 18 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze medals in the boxing tournaments of the All Africa Games between 1965 and 2019.
