On behalf of everyone at IBA, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of Nirmal “Nims” Purja MBE, as well as to the families of all those who lost their lives in the tragic Broad Peak avalanche. Reports published on 1 August 2026 confirmed that Purja died during an expedition on Broad Peak following an avalanche that struck the climbing team.

Nims was far more than an extraordinary mountaineer. Through his courage, determination, humility and unwavering belief in human potential, he inspired millions around the world. His achievements redefined what many thought possible in high altitude mountaineering and created a legacy that extends far beyond the mountains themselves. His remarkable accomplishments, including his record setting ascents of the world’s highest peaks, will continue to inspire generations of adventurers, athletes and leaders.

His achievements were extraordinary, but it was his ability to inspire others to push beyond perceived limitations that truly set him apart. He was a remarkable individual whose legacy will continue to motivate generations to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

At this difficult time, we join the global sporting and mountaineering community in remembering a true pioneer, leader and inspiration. While his passing is a profound loss, his example of resilience, ambition and service to others will endure for many years to come.

Rest in peace, Nims. Your legacy will continue to inspire the world.
