IBA opens disciplinary proceedings against AFBC President Eyassu Wossen Berhanu

July 3rd, 2025 / AFBC, Normalisation Committee

The International Boxing Association (IBA) announces that the Chairperson of the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit’s (BIIU) Tribunal has formally opened disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Eyassu Wossen Berhanu, President of the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC), following a complaint submitted by the IBA Head Office on 25 June 2025.

The proceedings stem from Mr. Berhanu’s public opposition to the AFBC Normalisation Committee, which was appointed by the IBA Board on 3 April 2025, to restore stability and governance within the Confederation. In a letter titled “Unity, Sovereignty, and Our Unshakable Position”, issued on 25 June, Mr. Berhanu rejected the legitimacy of the Committee and called on National Federations to disengage from its activities.

The BIIU Tribunal has identified potential breaches of the following IBA regulations:

  • Article 14.5 of the IBA Constitution – Non-compliance with decisions of the Normalisation Committee;
  • Article 15 of the IBA Disciplinary and Ethics Code (DEC) – Violation of the IBA Constitution and Regulations;
  • Article 20.1 of the DEC – Disparagement of IBA’s reputation and interests.

According to the Tribunal, Mr. Berhanu’s actions, including public communications undermining the Committee’s authority and encouraging defiance among member federations pose a serious threat to the integrity of IBA governance in Africa. These actions risk exacerbating existing divisions, potentially leading to open conflict within the AFBC.

As a result, the Tribunal has imposed a 90-day provisional suspension on Mr. Berhanu from all IBA and AFBC-related activities, effective immediately. This measure is deemed necessary and proportionate given the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

An Italian attorney-at-law based in Switzerland, has been appointed as the Investigation and Prosecution Officer in this matter. He will submit a full report and recommendations to the Tribunal by August 15, 2025.

The IBA reiterates its commitment to upholding transparency, accountability, and good governance across all levels of the sport.
