The eleventh edition of the All Africa Games begins this week in Brazzaville, as the event returns to the capital city of Congo for the first time since the inaugural edition in 1965.

An excellent array of boxing talent will take to the ring in the Gymnase Talangai venue, where North African nations including Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt have all named strong line-ups.

Further countries expected to impress include Nigeria who are expecting two gold medals in the event, and Uganda, who will have one of the most internationally experienced squads in Brazzaville.

“After my unsuccessful AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championships, I am focusing on reaching the top of the podium in Congo,” said Uganda’s exciting Light Heavyweight Kennedy Katende.

Hosts Congo claimed their last boxing medal 50 years ago in the first instalment of the Games, but confidence is high within the team that they can perform much better in front of their supportive home fans.

Many of the registered boxers recently fought in the AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championships, so plenty of exciting battles between finely tuned athletes are expected to dazzle.

Maputo, Mozambique hosted the last edition of the tournament four years ago, where Algeria and Mauritius both claimed three gold medals, while Cameroon, Botswana and Tunisia also achieved memorable triumphs.

Legendary past winners of this event include former Olympic Champions Robert Wangila and Hocine Soltani, plus Ghana’s iconic Azumah Nelson.
