Ahead of the final day of competition at the AMBC Continental Boxing Championships in the Honduras capital of Tegucigalpa on Sunday, AIBA’s HeadsUp programme continued its focus on the grassroots of the sport with a visit to the city’s boxing NGO Knockout Por La Paz. Based in the city’s United States neighbourhood, founder and head coach Ulises Fernando has been using the structure and values of boxing to turn around young people’s lives and help them overcome the challenges of growing up in the poor community. The Taishan equipment donated included training clothes, boxing gloves and gym equipment including new punch bags.

“This equipment is so important for us. The children will now be able to come and train using this new, modern kit, and this means a lot to us. They have been amazed by the unfolding boxing competition over the past week and this equipment will help them to understand that they, too, can achieve everything they want in life through boxing and sport,” said Mr Ulises Fernando during the visit.

Knockout Por La Paz currently has 40 children enrolled in its boxing classes, and offers opportunities for them to use the boxing facilities of Tegucigalpa’s Olympic Village. AMBC Championship Supervisor Mr Tom Virgets represented AIBA and HeadsUp on the visit with Honduras Boxing Federation President Mr Dhany Garcia.
