AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu and EUBC President Franco Falcinelli visited the Belarusian capital of Minsk on a multi-faceted trip that marked the 25th anniversary of the Belarus National Olympic Committee. The city hosted the European Olympic Committees General Assembly, after which the Belarus Boxing Federation President Dmitry Tikhomolov became the latest NF to sign the HeadsUp Charter, the fruits of which were realised with the inauguration of the Belarus School Boxing project. The project is part of the ongoing HeadsUp initiative to promote grassroots boxing programmes around the world.

“It is an important moment to have a nation with such a strong boxing history as Belarus sign this important charter as we reach the end of our first year of the HeadsUp initiative. AIBA is making great strides in support of our sport and athletes and the opening of the School Boxing Project is another example of our strong commitment to grassroots of boxing,” said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

The HeadsUp initiative began one year ago at the 2015 World Championships. Promoting the health and safety of boxers following the decision to remove headguards at Elite Men’s competitions, AIBA’s campaign is based around four key pillars of Education, Health, Sport and Sustainability, providing education to boxers and coaches alike and helping to create a sustainable career path while also promoting the sport’s core values.
