AIBA President concludes the African Extraordinary General Assembly by declaring 2017 ‘The Year of Africa’

After a parade of flags representing each of the 54 countries of the African continent in front of officials and National Federation delegates, African Boxing Confederation President Mr Kelani Bayor addressed the gathered audience. Outlining the impact of the new structure implemented since 2014 and the successful organisation of the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Cameroon in March which saw 33 quota places offered to Africa’s best male and female boxers, Mr Bayor also officially announced the appointment of General Somahoro Gaoussou, President of the Ivory Coast Boxing Federation, as Executive Committee Member of the Confederation.

General Gaoussou thanked the President for his confidence, saying his appointment was evidence of the recent growth of boxing in the country.

In conclusion, AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu lent his support to the new governance established by the Confederation President and stressed the importance of developing an even larger pool of well-trained officials, R&Js and medical staff in order to provide the necessary conditions for the sustainable, steady growth of boxing in Africa. The PresidEnt also stressed AIBA’s strong stance against doping and its compliance with WADA for testing both in and out of competition.

AIBA President ended by ensuring Africa of his commitment to the continent, before declaring 2017 ‘The Year of Africa’.
