25 nations ready to fight for AIBA World Boxing Championships medals

The 1/8 final day of AIBA World Boxing Championships determined eight best boxers out of seven weight classes. In total, 25 nations have at least one representative in the quarter-final.  Top three nations are Kazakhstan and Russia with seven boxers, Cuba and England with six athletes and Uzbekistan delegates five boxers.  

FLYWEIGHT SENSATION 

In the flyweight contest a confident performance of Galal Yafai (ENG) caused a sensation through a unanimous victory against defending World champion Yosvany Veitia (CUB). The winner meets with Billal Bennama from France who defeated Vasilii Egorov (RUS). 

Bulgarian Daniel Asenov proceeded to the quarter-finals and meets with the Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov. 

Saken Bibossinov (KAZ) defeated the third seeded Yuberjen Martines Rivas from Colombia and in the next round meets with Artur Hovhannisyan (ARM). Carlo Paalam (PHI) goes to the next round to be challenged by Indian Amit. 

BANTAMWEIGHT AGENDA

Three-times World champion Lazaro Alvarez Estrada had no problem against Dorin Busca (MDA). To continue to the next round he needs to beat Russian Albert Batyrgaziev who defeated Mirko Cuello from Argentina at the previous stage. 

Tsenbaatar Erdenebat (MGL) won his fight and meets with Kurt Walker from Ireland. Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov (UZB) progressed to the quarter-final where he has high-class opponent, second seeded Kairat Yeraliev (KAZ). Indian Singh Bisht fights against Peter McGrail (ENG).

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT FAVOURITES 

Third seeded Hovhannes Bachkov from Armenia proceeded to the quarter-final to meet Leonel De Los Santos of Dominican Republic who previously defeated Luke McCormack (ENG).

Andy Cruz Gomez from Cuba swept a unanimously victory against Zakir Safiullin (KAZ) and meets with Youth Olympic champion Ilya Popov from Russia. 

Second seeded defending World champion Sofiane Oumiha from France celebrated a victory against Bakhodur Usmonov (TJK). In the next round he fights against Keyshawn Davis from the USA. Wanderson de Oliveira (BRA) meets with Indian Manish Kaushik. 

WELTERWEIGHT FIGHTS

Top seeded Olympic champion from Cuba Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo fights against Russian veteran, Olympic bronze medalist Andrei Zamkovoi, while Rohan Polanco (DOM) goes up the ring to fight against Ablaikhan Zhussupov (KAZ). 

Second seeded Pat McCormack from England successfully challenged Lasha Guruli (GAO) and fights against Sewonrets Okazawa (JPN). Bobo-Usmon Baturov goes next against Zeyad Eashash (JOR).  

MIDDLEWEIGHT FIRST 

The 1/8 final for the weight category 75 kg took place one day earlier. There Arlen Lopez (CUB) proceeded to the next round after defeating Euri Cedeno (DOM). Russian Gleb Bakshi won a tough fight against Michael Nevin (IRL) and in the next round meets with Cuban. 

Tursynbay Kulakhmet set to the next round winning Javier Martinez from the USA in a spectacular fight. His next rival is Arman Darchinyan from Armenia who defeated the 6th seeded Andrej Csemez (SVK). 

Brazilian Hebert Da Conceicao meets with the 4th seeded Salvatore Cavallaro. And for Seyedshahin Mousavi (IRI) the next rival is Eumir Marcial (PHI). 

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT STARS

Light heavyweight star Julio La Cruz faces Russian Georgii Kushitashvili who defeated strong opponent from Belarus, while Bekzad Nurdauletov (KAZ) tries to deal with Bayram Malkan from Turkey. 

Second seeded Loren Alfonso Dominguez from Azerbaijan meets Uzbek Dilshodbek Ruzmetov. Benjamin Whittaker’s (ENG) rival is Jerome Joseph-Pampellone. 

HEAVYWEIGHT BATTLES 

Cuban defending World champion Erislandi Savon beat Alexander Bwambale from Sweden and fights against Radoslav Pantaleev from Bulgaria in the quarter-finals. 

European Games champion from Russia Muslim Gadzhimagomedov won against David Nyika (NZL) and in the next round he faces the 4th seeded Cheavon Clarke (ENG).

Olympic silver medalist Vassily Levit (KAZ) defeated Marat Hryhorian of Ukraine. His next rival is Hussein Iashaish (JOR).

Second seeded Sanjar Tursunov lost to Sanjeet Sanjeet (IND) with the split decision 1:4. In the next round Indian meets Julio Cesar Castillo Torres (ECU).   

SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT AS DESSERT 

Finally, super heavyweight fights were scheduled last. First seeded Kamshybek Kunkabayev (KAZ) fights against Nelvie Tiafack from Germany. Mahammad Abdullayev from Azerbaijan’s opponent is Justis Huni from Australia. 

England Frazer Edward Clarke meets with Russian Maksim Babanin. Richard Torrez (USA) rival is Bakhodir Jalolov from Uzbekistan.

Quarter-finals are scheduled on September 18.
