Five reasons to watch IBA PRO 18 in Mexico
May 20th, 2026 / IBA.Pro
On 21 May, Arena CDMX will host IBA PRO 18 — a major night of professional boxing staged by IBA in partnership with Zanfer Boxing. For Mexico, this is more than just another fight night. The card brings together former world champions, dangerous contenders, rising prospects and international match-ups featuring fighters from Mexico, the Philippines, Colombia, Argentina, Nigeria and beyond.
Here are five reasons to watch.
1. Angel Ayala returns
The main event marks the return of Angel Ayala Lardizabal, one of Mexico’s most exciting fighters in the lighter divisions. “Camaleón” comes in with a record of 18-1, including eight wins by knockout, and already has serious names on his record. On his way to the top level, he defeated former world champions Felix Alvarado and Cristofer Rosales before stopping Dave Apolinario to win the IBF flyweight title.
Ayala is now looking to rebuild after his defeat in Japan and start a new push towards championship status. For him, fighting in Mexico City is not just a home appearance — it is a chance to put himself back in the global conversation.
2. Jayson Mama is a dangerous Filipino test
Ayala’s opponent is Jayson Mama of the Philippines, a fighter with a record of 21-3-1 and 10 knockout wins. He has already fought for a world title, going the distance against Sunny Edwards, and knows what it means to compete at international level.
The Filipino boxing tradition has long been associated with pace, pressure and a willingness to trade. Mama fits that profile. He will not simply wait for Ayala to make mistakes — he will look to force them. That is what makes the main event such an interesting test for both men.
3. David Picasso returns in front of the Mexican crowd
Another major name on the card is David “Rey” Picasso, who recently went the full 12 rounds against Naoya Inoue, one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound. Picasso lost by decision, but lasting the distance against “The Monster” says plenty about his level and his character.
For the Mexican crowd, his appearance is a story in itself. Picasso remains one of the country’s most recognisable and promising fighters, and every outing after the Inoue fight will be seen as a new chapter in his career.
4. Yamileth Mercado brings championship pedigree
The women’s bout on the card also deserves close attention. Yamileth Mercado is one of the leading names in Mexican women’s boxing and a former WBC super bantamweight world champion. She made eight successful title defences, shared the ring with Amanda Serrano and boxed in a unification fight against Ellie Scotney.
In Mexico City, Mercado faces Colombia’s Flor Valentina Rodriguez. For Mercado, this is a chance to return to winning ways and remind the boxing world that she remains a fighter of genuine international standing.
5. Mexican boxing atmosphere — and legends at ringside
IBA PRO 18 takes place in Mexico, a country where boxing is woven into the national sporting culture. That means this night is not only about the fights themselves, but also about the atmosphere of a major Mexican boxing event.
Several great names of the sport are expected to attend, including Julio César Chávez, Jorge Arce, Emanuel Navarrete, Jaime Munguía and Rafael Espinoza. Another special touch will be the presence of legendary ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr, whose voice has accompanied some of boxing’s biggest nights.
For fans at Arena CDMX, this is a chance to experience a strong international card and a living connection between generations — from Mexican boxing legends to the fighters now trying to take their next step towards the world stage.
