The International Boxing Association (IBA) continued its commitment to global boxing development as IBA Bare-Knuckle Director Jim Freeman attended the very first Gambian Elite National Championships, held on Saturday, 18 April at Africell Park, Fajara, in front of a lively and enthusiastic crowd.
The landmark event marked an important milestone for Gambian boxing, bringing together elite athletes, officials, and members of the national boxing community for a celebration of competition and progress. During the championships, Freeman presented awards to several boxers and held constructive meetings with respected delegates from the Gambian National Federation, reinforcing the IBA’s ongoing collaboration and support.

The successful staging of the championships was further strengthened by equipment provided through the IBA Financial Support Programme, delivered via the IBA International Relations Department. This support ensured a professional competition environment and created meaningful opportunities for the boxers competing in this historic event.
Speaking during his visit, Jim Freeman praised the organisation and atmosphere surrounding the championships:
“To witness the passion, pride, and determination of the Gambian boxers at this inaugural Elite National Championships was truly inspiring. Events like this lay the foundation for a strong boxing future, and the IBA is proud to support national federations by providing the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to help athletes thrive and grow on the international stage.”
The IBA remains committed to supporting national federations worldwide, fostering sustainable development, and creating pathways for boxers at all levels through strategic investment, collaboration, and a shared vision.
