Kristy Harris and Caitlin Parker to compete for team Australia at Commonwealth Games 2022

June 27th, 2022 / Commonwealth Games 2022

Team Australia selected four female and seven male boxers to compete at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. IBA Board of Directors member Kristy Harris and IBA Athletes’ Committee member Caitlin Parker will be representing the team at the tournament.

At the Commonwealth Games, there will be 16 events in ten men’s and six women’s weight categories. Out of the 72 Association, 63 are planning to send teams to the boxing event which is one of the most traditional sports. Gold Coast hosted the last edition of the Games in 2018 where Australian boxers earned three gold medals.

In December 2021, team Australia came back to the international competitions after a break due to the pandemic. In March they conducted the National Selection Tournament for the Commonwealth Games.

Kristy Harris was elected as a member of the IBA Board of Directors during the IBA Congress in Istanbul. She is still an active boxer and will represent Australia in the light flyweight (50kg) at the Commonwealth Games. She earned a bronze medal at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India which is still her career highlight.

Caitlin Parker achieved a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she has been visible at the international events since 2013. She was recently appointed a member of the IBA Athletes’ Committee and now is aiming for the title of the women’s middleweight (75kg) in Birmingham.

Kaye Scott is the most experienced women’s team member who claimed a silver medal at the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Tina Rahimi is the first Muslim girl in the national team of Australia, she showed her brilliant technical skills at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul last month. Rahimi has less than 20 contests in her career but she could be a strong rival for others in the featherweight (57kg).

The Australians have a new men’s team for the Commonwealth Games. Only Alex Winwood remained in the squad, who can show strong performance. Charlie Senior is young talent in the featherweight (57kg), who also has some international experience, while Billy Polkinghorn is a strong puncher. Taha Ahmed, Callum Peters, Billy McAllister and Edgard Coumi are the newcomers at this level.
