WSB stars grab five golds at Venezuela’s Francisco Morochito Rodriguez Tournament

November 27th, 2015 / All

Hosts Venezuela dominated the 2015 Francisco Morochito Rodriguez Tournament in Cumana this week, taking nine golds out of a possible twelve on offer. The competition, named after the country’s legendary Olympic champion, underlined the current crop of talent coming out of the South American country as its Caciques de Venezuela WSB team gears up for Season VI of the World Series of Boxing.

Among the five WSB boxers to win gold was hometown hero Angelino Cordova, who defeated Costa Rica’s Robinson Rodriguez to mark a career-best performance. His team-mate Franklin Gonzalez took an impressive gold in his first year as an elite boxer, along with the WSB star and 2015 Pan-American Games welterweight champion Gabriel Maestre.

“We are proud of our boxers and they proved themselves in the ring throughout the entire tournament. They showed great commitment, and now our technical team will analyse the results and select the best team for our WSB franchise Caciques de Venezuela and the AIBA American Olympic Qualifiers,” said the President of the Venezuelan Boxing Federation, Mr. Francisco Lopez.

The Venezuelan women’s team also received a timely boost ahead of their Olympic preparations as the trio of Karlha Magliocco, Francelis Carmona and Mailin Barrera landed a clean sweep of all three gold medals on offer in the women’s tournament.
