The ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships starts today April 19 in Bangkok, Thailand with finals scheduled to April 26. Twelve AIBA Women’s World Champions will attend the competition, and Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov will also make his debut at the flyweight (52kg) today.

A record number of 36 nations are registered, and women and men will compete together for the very first time. Also, Bahrain will make its debut and join the boxing map!

Women’s event

The Asian boxers claimed eight out of ten gold medals of the New Delhi 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships topping the rankings among the continents. Among their defending champions, seven will attend this championship while India’s six-time world champion Mary Kom will focus on the upcoming AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

China’s four defending champions Dou Dan (64kg), Li Qian (75kg), Wang Lina (81kg) and Yang Xiaoli (+81kg) are present. Their Asian Games winners Chang Yuan (51kg), Yin Junhua (57kg) and Astana 2016 AIBA Women’s World Champion Yang Wenlu (60kg) are also in the squad.

Chinese Taipei, who won their first and second titles in New Delhi last November, will have both of their athletes Chen Nien Chin (69kg), and Lin Yu Ting (57kg) compete. DPR Korea’s Pang Chol Mi (51kg) is Asia’s seventh defending AIBA Women’s World Champion. Kazakhstan champion’s trio Nazym Kyzaibay (51kg), Dina Zholaman (54kg) and Lyazzat Kungeibayeva (+81kg) also have strong potential.

Philippines’ Josie Gabuco won her title at the light flyweight (48kg) in 2012, which means altogether 12 world champions are participating. Seven out of the ten titleholders of the ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships will try to defend their thrones in Bangkok. The host nation’s best hopes could be Chuthamat Raksat (51kg) and Sudaporn Seesondee (60kg).

Men’s event

Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov will make his debut at the flyweight (52kg), and can expect tough rivals in the division.

Uzbekistan’s team is strong with world champions Sanjar Tursunov (91kg) and Bakhodir Jalolov (+91kg). Their Asian Games winners Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov (56kg), Bobo-Usmon Baturov (69kg) and Israil Madrimov (75kg) are also among favourites.

Kazakhstan’s Kairat Yeraliyev is the defending AIBA World Champion at the bantamweight (56kg), silver Rio 2016 Olympic medallist Vasiliy Levit (91kg) and Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev will be among the strongest.

World championships medallists China’s Hu Jianguan (52kg), Thailand’s Chatchai Decha Butdee (56kg), South Korea’s Kim In Kyu (52kg) and India’s Shiva Thapa (60kg) and newly crowned Asian Games winners from Jakarta India’s Amit Panghal (52kg) and Mongolia’s Erdenebat Tsendbaatar (60kg) might have their chance in Bangkok.
