AFBC Youth Continental Championships came to a close in Casablanca after five days of fascinating boxing action, where the breadth of talent of the continent was underlined as six teams left with at least one gold medal. Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco toped the podiums, and a total of 10 teams went home with at least one medal.

A total of 20 women and 65 men began the five days tournament, which also made available quota places for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and the awaited Youth World Boxing Championships (12 and 78 quota places respectively).

On the women’s side of the draws, the Moroccan and Tunisian teams were very successful both going home with two golds and proving their talented team is ready for the big competitions coming. But the surprise came from Ethiopia’s Hana Derete Tadesse who impressed the crowd in Casablanca in the light flyweight (48kg) category.

To the delight of the Moroccan fans, the home team was also strong on the men’s side, ending the competition with six men’s medals (3 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes), closed to Tunisia’s 7 medals (2 silvers and 5 bronzes). Egypt also showed great potential, especially in the heavy categories, as they flew back home with the lightweight (60 kg), light heavyweight (81 kg) and super heavyweight (91+ kg) gold medals.
