Second edition of Men’s and Women’s Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament to receive visit from AIBA President Dr Wu

December 6th, 2016 / IBA

Tuesday sees the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament get underway for only the second time, open to men and women boxers at Elite, Youth, Junior and Novice level. The five-day tournament, the most important in the region, is this year hosted by the Barbados Boxing Association, and will receive AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu on 10 December for the last of the 30 finals.

Dr Wu’s presence at the finals will be a central element of his visit to the region to improve integration and cooperation between the Caribbean’s National Federations and to discuss their ongoing development. AIBA currently oversees 200 NFs around the world, each with its own unique size, level of resources and stature. Through the HeadsUp programme launched last year, AIBA aims to provide greater opportunities and support for boxers and grassroots assistance where it is needed most.

The 17 countries taking part are Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Trinidad & Tobago and US Virgin Islands. The Caribbean region produced two Olympians in Rio 2016, Nigel Paul (TTO) and Laurent Clayton Jr. (ISV), this competition will help to identify future Olympic boxers like they have in the past.
