EUBC Women’s & Men’s Youth Continental Championships come to a climax in Roseto degli Abruzzi crowning the new generation of European Champions

Wednesday witnessed twenty thrilling finals of the 2018 EUBC Youth Women’s & Men’s Continental Championships in the Italian city of Roseto degli Abruzzi, at which Russia, Ukraine, England, Hungary, Ireland, Slovakia, Azerbaijan and Poland topped the podium along with the hosts Italy whose boxers dominated the Men’s 75kg and Women’s 51kg & 54kg weight categories. A total of 358 boxers from 41 countries began the tournament, which also made available 122 quota places for the 2018 Youth Women’s & Men’s World Championships as well as 13 tickets for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

Italy, England and Ukraine topped the Women’s medal table clinching two golds each. Italia’s Martina la Piana (51kg) was full of confidence and impressed the local crowd with a round performance across the event which grants her the status of one to watch in the upcoming World Championships. Ireland, Russia and Poland completed the gold record by winning one medal each.

But the best team performance of the competition came on the Men’s weight categories, where the Russian squad achieved the outstanding number of five gold medals. Ilia Popov (64kg), Dzhambulat Bizhamov (69kg), Ruslan Kolesnikov (81kg), Igor Fedorov (91kg) and Aleksei Dronov (91+kg) showed the huge potential of the new generation of athletes from the Russian boxing powerhouse. Hungary, Italy, England, Azerbaijan and Ukraine also tasted the glory in Roseto degli Abruzzo winning one gold medal each.
