AIBA continues to place its focus on learning in 2017 with the confirmation of a range of courses across the year for the AIBA Family. With education one of the founding pillars of AIBA’s far-reaching HeadsUp programme and a priority of the new Olympic cycle to Tokyo 2020, it is also the cornerstone of the 2017 Year of Africa, for which the new GlovesUp initiative has been devised to provide a new entry level course for those looking to join the AIBA Family.

“AIBA is instigating changes that will ensure the new Olympic cycle and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games provide the perfect stage for the world’s best boxers to perform on. A key element of that is the ongoing education of all the stakeholders that comprise the AIBA Family, in order that everyone, including boxers, their coaches and the officials, are given the tools to perform at the very highest levels that such a tournament demands,” said AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu.

Referees and Judges
Following two Referee and Judges courses already held this year, on 3-4 April Assisi, Italy was the location for the first R&J Instructor Course since the new rules were adopted for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle. Across the two days, 23 of AIBA’s most experienced instructors from 20 countries reviewed the changes and the new R&J Instruction Manual, as well as finalising the evaluation process that will be used in all competitions to ensure even greater consistency in officiating.

With the training and expansion of its global network of officials a priority for AIBA throughout the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle, the next 2-Star R&J courses are scheduled to take place at the end of April in Kazakhstan and in Poland, followed by a 3-Star event in Cuba in May and a 2-Star in Mongolia in June. Coaches
Thirteen 1- and 2-star coaching courses have now been confirmed between April and September of 2017, as AIBA continues to work hard to develop new coaching talent around the world. Applications from coaches are currently open for ten courses, including two 2-star events in Ukraine and Australia.

AIBA also invites National Federations looking to apply to host courses to complete the form found at www.iba.sport/coaches for consideration. The AIBA team of instructors can be deployed to hold a course for any NF that meets the criteria, part of the organisation’s commitment to ensuring all of its member federations are represented by coaches with the most up-to-date techniques and information at their disposal.

ITOs and Supervisors
Assisi is also the location for the year’s first ITO Instructor workshop being held from 11-12 April. With courses for AIBA’s International Technical Officials and Supervisors scheduled to take place at each of the 2017 Continental Qualification Tournaments, 8 of the top AIBA Supervisors gathered to revise the course content and their methods for efficient ITO evaluation during competitions.

Year of Africa
The Year of Africa is a multi-tiered approach to the development of boxing in Africa to maximise the potential and talent on the vast continent. Education forms the backbone of a year of events, with AIBA and its National Federations staging a series of courses from the entry-level GlovesUp initiative to one, two and three-star R&J and Coaches courses.

The GlovesUp course sets out an introduction to AIBA and the expectations of those looking to become a part of the AIBA Family as set out in the Code of Ethics. The key areas covered include anti-doping, fair play and respect, pillars on which boxing will continue to thrive in Africa and all around the world.
